How to use the board
  • Move around. Drag the board with the mouse or a finger. Arrow keys pan it, and Shift pans further. Double-click to frame everything again.
  • Zoom. Click the board once, then use the scroll wheel — it zooms on the point under the pointer. Pinch on a touchscreen, or use − and + on the toolbar. The plus, minus and 0 keys do the same, and 0 refits everything.
  • Views. Fit all frames every figure. Human frames the people and lets a tower run off the top of the board, where a marker names it. Focus fills the board with the figure you have selected — the F key does the same.
  • Units. cm or ft / in switches which ruler leads. Both rulers stay on the board, so a height is never only in the unit you do not read.
  • Reference line. Switch it on to get a dashed line across the board, then drag it to any height to see who clears it. The box beside the toolbar sets it exactly.
  • Overlap. Stacks every figure on one centre line instead of standing them in a row — the way to compare two silhouettes of nearly the same height.

About this calculator

Height is hard to picture from a number and easy to judge from a picture. This board puts people, celebrities, athletes, animals, cars, everyday objects and world landmarks side by side at one shared scale — a centimetre is the same number of pixels whether it belongs to a house mouse or to the Burj Khalifa — so the gap between any two of them reads straight off the screen instead of having to be worked out. Two rulers run down the edges, centimetres on one and feet and inches on the other, so both answers are visible at once and neither is a conversion you have to take on trust. How to read your results

The board behaves like a map: scroll or pinch to zoom, drag to pan, and press Fit all to frame everything again. Because the scale never changes between figures, a tower really does turn a person into a sliver — that is the honest rendering rather than a fault, and the Human view re-frames around the people while markers along the top edge name whatever has gone off the top; click one to fly to it. Each caption gives that figure’s height in the unit you have chosen, and the opposite rail still shows the other unit. Switch on the reference line to drag a single height across the whole board, which is the quickest way to ask who clears 180 cm, and switch on Overlap to stack every figure on one baseline instead of standing them in a row. Every height carries a badge saying how good the number is — Measured, Claimed, Reported or Disputed — and where sources genuinely disagree the figure is drawn as a band across the published range rather than collapsed into an average nobody published.

How it's calculated

Every height is stored in centimetres and drawn at one scale: the board holds a single pixels-per-centimetre value, and a figure’s height on screen is its height in centimetres multiplied by that value. Nothing is normalised per figure, which is what lets a mouse and a skyscraper share a baseline across a span of roughly 12,700 to 1. The two rulers are generated independently rather than converted from one another. The metric rail steps along a 1, 2, 2.5, 5 × 10ⁿ ladder and picks a single unit for the whole rail, so it never mixes metres and centimetres in one column; the imperial rail steps on whole inches and whole feet. Conversions use the exact international inch of 2.54 cm (NIST SP 811), and inches are rounded before they are carried, so 11.96 inches prints as 1′0″ and never as 0′12″. What “height” means is recorded per figure and deliberately differs by category, because copying one definition across all of them would be the lie: people are barefoot standing height; athletes are barefoot where a barefoot figure is published and listed-roster height otherwise, which is why a league listing and a measured figure can differ by an inch or two; animals are measured at the shoulder or the withers rather than the top of the head, except for species conventionally given as total length; buildings are drawn to architectural top where the CTBUH publishes one and to the tip where the recognised figure includes a spire or mast, so the Eiffel Tower’s 330 m is a tip figure while the Burj Khalifa’s 828 m is architectural. The standing authorities are the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (Lancet, 2020) for all 80 national averages, which are mean heights at age 19; the CTBUH Skyscraper Center and building owners for structures; the American Kennel Club and Animal Diversity Web for animals; manufacturers for vehicles and standards bodies for everyday objects; and official club, league or federation pages for athletes ahead of any secondary tracker. Each record travels with its publisher, the date it was retrieved and the figure exactly as it was published, so a height converted from 5′11″ can always be read back. Each also carries an evidence class: Measured means an official or institutional body published a measured figure, Claimed means the person or their representative stated it, Reported means a secondary source reports it — the honest label for most celebrity heights — and Disputed means reputable sources contradict each other. All 14 disputed records are drawn as bands across the published range and none is averaged, alongside 28 further bands that are not disagreements at all but natural variation, such as a breed standard or a species range.

Worked example

Messi is drawn at 169 cm and Ronaldo at 185 cm, and the answer strip reads “Lionel Messi is 16 cm (6.3″ · 8.6%) shorter than Cristiano Ronaldo”. The percentage is taken against the taller figure, so it is the share of Ronaldo’s height that Messi is missing — turned around, Ronaldo is 9.5% taller than Messi, which is the same gap counted from the other end. In feet and inches the two are 5′6.5″ and 6′0.8″, and that looks like a wider gap than 16 cm does because a whole-foot boundary happens to fall inside it. It is the same distance either way, which is exactly why both rails stay on screen.

How do I compare my height to a celebrity’s?

Type your height into “Add person”, give it a name, and it joins the board as a figure like any other. Then search the catalogue for the person you want beside you — the search matches partial names, so “shah rukh” finds Shah Rukh Khan — and tap the result to add them. The answer strip under the board gives the difference in centimetres, in inches and as a percentage, and the link in your address bar updates as you go, so sharing the comparison is a copy and paste.

Where do the heights come from, and how accurate are they?

Each figure names its own publisher, the date the number was retrieved and the value exactly as it was published, all of which are visible on the figure itself and printed in the export. National averages come from the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration’s 2020 Lancet analysis; buildings from the CTBUH Skyscraper Center and their owners; animals from the American Kennel Club, Animal Diversity Web and zoological references; athletes from official club, league or federation pages wherever one exists. Celebrity heights are the weakest class and are labelled as such: most are Reported, meaning a secondary source publishes the figure and no measured record exists. That badge is the point — it tells you how much weight the comparison can carry before you share it.

Why is a figure sometimes drawn as a band instead of a single line?

Because the published height is a range, and flattening a range into its midpoint invents a number nobody measured. There are two reasons a range appears. The first is natural variation: a Labrador Retriever is 57.2–62.2 cm at the shoulder because that is the breed standard, and an African elephant is 290–370 cm because elephants differ. The second is disagreement: 14 records in the catalogue have reputable sources contradicting each other, and those are drawn across the full contested span and badged Disputed. In both cases the answer strip warns that a comparison involving a band is approximate.

How tall is the average man and the average woman?

For the United States the catalogue holds 176.9 cm (5′9.6″) for men and 163.3 cm (5′4.3″) for women, a gap of 13.6 cm. Those are mean heights at age 19 from the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration’s 2020 analysis in the Lancet, which is the standard basis for cross-country comparison, and they are barefoot figures. Averages move a long way by country: of the forty countries in this catalogue the Dutch average man is tallest at 183.8 cm and the Guatemalan average man shortest at 164.4 cm, 19.4 cm apart — roughly the difference between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Why does a person almost disappear next to a building?

Because that is what one honest scale looks like. A 176.9 cm adult is about 0.2% of the Burj Khalifa’s 828 m, so at a zoom level that fits the tower on screen the person is a couple of pixels wide — and any chart that shows both at a comfortable size has quietly stopped using one scale. Rather than fake it, the board gives you the camera: the Human view re-frames around the people and leaves the tall figures deliberately off the top, with markers naming what went off and a click to fly back to any of them.
