About this calculator
This calculator tells you exactly how long you have been together — in years, months, and days — and counts down the days until your next anniversary. It also looks up the traditional gift associated with each milestone year, so you always know what to give (or hint at). Enter any start date: a wedding, a first date, a work anniversary, or any event you want to mark.
How to read your results
The headline figure is the total elapsed years, with the remaining months and days shown underneath. The timeline below lists your next five anniversaries with the number of days until each one and the traditional gift name for that year. The insight card calls out the gift theme for the year you are currently in — the period between your last anniversary and your next.
Worked example
Event date: 15 June 2020. Today: 28 May 2026.
5 years, 11 months, and 13 days have passed. The current year is your 5th — the Wood anniversary. Your next anniversary (the 6th, Iron) falls on 15 June 2026, just 18 days away.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the traditional and modern gift lists?
The traditional list dates back to 19th-century European customs and names a material or theme for each year. The modern list was introduced in 1937 by the American National Retail Jeweler Association and expanded the milestone years to include every year up to 20 and then every fifth year after that, with updated and more commercially giftable items. Both are shown here so you can choose the one that fits your style.
What happens if our anniversary falls on 29 February?
In non-leap years the calculator places the anniversary on 1 March, which is the standard convention used by most date-math libraries (JavaScript's Date object rolls over the extra day). If you prefer 28 February, adjust the date accordingly for non-leap years.
What is the 25th anniversary called?
The 25th anniversary is the Silver anniversary — both the traditional and modern lists agree. It is one of the most widely celebrated milestones. Gifts of silver jewellery, silverware, or silver-coloured decorations are traditional.
What is the 50th anniversary called?
The 50th anniversary is the Gold anniversary. Reaching half a century together is considered a major milestone in nearly every culture; celebrations often involve family gatherings, a renewal of vows, and gifts of gold jewellery or items with gold accents.
How it's calculated
Elapsed time is computed in UTC to avoid timezone and daylight-saving surprises. Years and months are counted by calendar arithmetic: the month count decrements if the day component would go negative, and the year count decrements if the month count would go negative. Future anniversary dates are constructed by adding whole years to the original event date, using JavaScript's Date.UTC so that leap-year edge cases (e.g. a 29 February event) are handled by the host engine. The traditional gift list follows the US traditional column from the Wikipedia "Wedding anniversary" article (ISO 8601 dates throughout).
