## Overview

If you took A-levels and a US university, employer or scholarship asks for a GPA on the 4.0 scale, this tool gives you an indicative figure. Enter each of your A-level grades and it returns an estimated US 4.0 GPA, the approximate percentage band each grade sits in, and — because the same grades also matter for UK applications — the total UCAS Tariff points they earn. There is no official A-level-to-GPA conversion, so the GPA here is an orientation estimate, not a credential evaluation.

## How to read your result

The headline is the average indicative US GPA across the grades you enter, with the closest US letter shown beside it. Below it you get the approximate percentage band and the UCAS Tariff total, then a grade-by-grade table so you can see how each A-level maps. Treat the letter and the broad band as the real signal rather than the exact decimal: US institutions assess A-levels in context (like advanced AP-style coursework) and frequently recompute any GPA with their own policy, so two universities can read the same grades differently.

## Method

Each A-level grade is mapped to an indicative US letter and 4.0 GPA point using the conversion most widely reproduced by UK-to-US grade tools: A* and A both read as 4.0 (A* sits at the very top of the 4.0 scale, which has no separate A+ above 4.0), B as 3.3 (B+), C as 2.7 (B−), D as 2.0 (C), E as 1.0 (D) and U as 0.0 (F). The approximate percentages come from the awarding-body UMS grade boundaries that defined the old modular A-levels — A* roughly 90%+, A 80–89%, B 70–79%, C 60–69%, D 50–59%, E 40–49% — which remain the standard heuristic even though reformed linear A-levels now set boundaries per subject and session. The average GPA is the simple mean of the per-grade GPA values. Separately, the UCAS Tariff total uses the official UCAS points for an A-level (56 at A*, 48 at A, 40 at B, 32 at C, 24 at D, 16 at E). The GPA and percentage are indicative; the UCAS points are official.

## Example

- **Setup:** You achieved A, A and B at A-level. Enter the three grades A, A and B.
- **Result:** The calculator shows an indicative GPA of about 3.77 (≈ A−), an approximate 81% average, and 136 UCAS Tariff points (48 + 48 + 40). The decimal is approximate — the takeaway is “a strong A/A− profile”, not a precise 3.77.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there an official A-level to GPA conversion?

No. Neither the awarding bodies nor US universities publish an official A-level-to-GPA formula. US institutions read your letter grades in the context of your school and often recalculate any GPA with their own internal policy. This tool gives an indicative estimate to help you orient yourself, not a figure for official applications.

### Why do A* and A both show 4.0?

Most US 4.0 scales top out at 4.0 with no separate grade above an A, so both an A* and an A map to the ceiling. Some granular tables drop a plain A to 3.7 to keep A* distinct; this tool uses the more common A*=A=4.0 mapping and shows the percentage band so the difference is still visible.

### How accurate is the percentage?

It is a rough band, not a mark. A-level grades are not fixed percentages — the old UMS boundaries (40/50/60/70/80%) are the standard approximation, but reformed linear A-levels set grade boundaries per subject and exam session, so your actual mark can sit anywhere within the band.

### What are the UCAS points for?

UCAS Tariff points are the UK system universities use to compare qualifications; some offers are stated in points. The figure here is the official UCAS total for your A-levels. To combine A-levels with other qualifications (the IB, BTECs, an EPQ), use the UCAS Tariff Points Calculator.

### Should I send this GPA to a US university?

Generally no. Applicants are usually advised to submit the transcript with its original grades and grading scale rather than a self-converted GPA. For an official figure required by a graduate programme, use a course-by-course credential evaluation such as WES or ECCTIS.
