## Overview

The International Baccalaureate Diploma is scored out of 45: six subjects worth up to 7 points each (42 in total) plus up to 3 bonus points from the core — Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE). This calculator adds up your points and, just as importantly, checks the official IBO conditions that decide whether the diploma is actually awarded — a high total alone is not enough. It also shows an indicative US GPA range, clearly labelled as a heuristic because the IB publishes no official GPA conversion.

## How to read your result

Set a grade (1–7) for each Higher Level and Standard Level subject, pick your TOK and Extended Essay grades (A–E), and say whether CAS is complete. The headline shows your total out of 45 and whether the diploma is awarded. If it is not, you get the exact reasons — for example a subject graded 1, too many low grades, or an E in the core. The score and the award decision are factual, straight from the IBO rules. The indicative GPA beside them is only a rough orientation figure: US universities recalculate it their own way and take HL rigour into account.

## Method

Each of the six subjects is graded 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), so the subjects contribute a maximum of 42 points. The core adds 0–3 points using the official IBO matrix: your TOK and Extended Essay grades (each A–E) are looked up together — for example a B in TOK with a C in the EE gives 2 points — and a grade E in either is a failing condition that bars the diploma outright. The maximum total is 45 and the minimum to be awarded the diploma is 24, but the points threshold is only one of eight conditions. The others, taken directly from the IBO DP passing criteria, are: CAS requirements met; a grade in every subject, TOK and the EE; no grade 1 in any subject; no more than two grade 2s; no more than three grades of 3 or below; at least 12 points from HL subjects; at least 9 points from SL subjects; and no E in TOK or the EE. This calculator evaluates all of them. The indicative GPA comes from widely-reproduced heuristic bands (the IBO itself provides none) and is shown as a range to discourage false precision.

## Example

- **Setup:** You have HL grades 6, 6, 6, SL grades 5, 5, 5, an A in TOK and an A in the Extended Essay, with CAS complete.
- **Result:** Your six subjects total 33 points and the TOK/EE core adds 3, giving 36 out of 45. All eight conditions are met, so the diploma is awarded. The indicative US GPA range shown is roughly 3.6–3.8 — a guide only.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the maximum IB score and the minimum to pass?

The maximum is 45 points: 42 from six subjects (7 each) plus 3 from the TOK/Extended Essay core. The minimum to be awarded the diploma is 24 points, provided every other condition is also met.

### How do the TOK and Extended Essay points work?

Your TOK and Extended Essay grades (each A–E) are combined using the official IBO matrix to award 0–3 bonus points — for instance a B in TOK and a C in the EE gives 2. A grade E in either TOK or the EE is a failing condition: the diploma is not awarded regardless of how many points you have.

### Can I score 24 or more and still not get the diploma?

Yes. Reaching 24 points is necessary but not sufficient. You can fail on a grade 1 in any subject, too many grade 2s or 3s, fewer than 12 points at HL or 9 at SL, an E in TOK or the EE, or incomplete CAS. This calculator checks all of these and lists any that you miss.

### Does the IB convert to a US GPA?

No. The IBO explicitly states it does not provide or endorse any conversion to the US A–F or 4.0 GPA scale. The GPA range here is an indicative heuristic only; US universities recalculate using their own policy and weigh the rigour of HL subjects. Do not use it for official applications.

### Are HL and SL subjects weighted differently in the score?

No. For the total out of 45, HL and SL subjects are valued equally — each contributes its grade (1–7). HL and SL only differ in the award conditions, which require a minimum of 12 points across HL subjects and 9 across SL subjects.
