## About this calculator

A height percentile is the share of a population that is no taller than you. At 180 cm a US man aged 20 or over is at the 74.1st percentile — about 3 in 4 American men are shorter, and 1 in 3.9 is taller. This page reads that figure off the measured percentiles the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey published for 2015–2018, or, for any of 200 other countries, off a model built on that country's published mean and labelled as a model.

## How to read your results

The headline is a percentage, not a rank: "74.1%" means 74.1% of the stated population is no taller than the height entered, and the line under it says how many are taller and roughly what fraction that is. Read the population line with it — the same 180 cm is the 74.1st percentile of US men 20 and over, the 35.8th in the Netherlands and the 98.6th in India, so a percentile with no population attached says nothing. On the curve, the nine dots are the survey's own published percentiles: solid dots and a solid line mean the answer sits between two measured points, hollow dots mean the whole curve is modelled, and a dashed end means the height is past the last measured point and the number out there is an extrapolation.

## How it's calculated

Two datasets, and the page never blends them. United States: Tables 9 and 11 of Fryar CD, Carroll MD, Gu Q, Afful J, Ogden CL, "Anthropometric reference data for children and adults: United States, 2015–2018" (National Center for Health Statistics, Vital Health Stat 3(46), 2021) — nine percentiles for each sex in eight age bands, from 5,092 examined men and 5,510 examined women. Interpolation is linear in z between those nine points, so every published percentile is reproduced exactly; outside them the curve continues as a normal whose standard deviation is fitted by least squares across all nine points, because the last published segment is one sampling fluctuation wide (the 90th-to-95th gap implies 3.6 cm for men aged 60–69 and 13.1 cm for men aged 70–79). The fit is checked against a figure it was never shown: the mean it predicts matches the separately published mean to within 0.35 cm in all sixteen cells, with a fitted spread of 6.1–7.1 cm for women and 6.9–7.7 cm for men. Only the mean is measured there, so the percentile is modelled by shifting the measured US 20–29 distribution of the same sex until its mean matches; the 20–29 cell is the donor rather than the pooled adult cell because the pooled one is wider from its 5th to its 95th — 2.0 cm wider in men and 0.9 cm in women — spanning a century of secular growth and the height adults lose with age. Feet and inches use the exact 1959 inch of 2.54 cm. All input is validated with Zod before anything is computed.

### What percentile is my height?

Enter it above and the page reads it off the published percentiles. For orientation: among US men aged 20 and over, 170 cm is the 25th percentile, 175.4 cm the 50th, 180.2 cm the 75th and 187.4 cm the 95th. Among US women of the same ages, 156.4 cm is the 25th, 161.3 cm the 50th, 166.0 cm the 75th and 172.5 cm the 95th.

### What height is the 90th percentile?

For US adults aged 20 and over it is 184.7 cm (6 ft 1 in) for men and 170.2 cm (5 ft 7 in) for women — both are figures NCHS publishes directly rather than values this page interpolated. One adult in ten is at or above them.

### Is 6 feet tall rare?

Six feet is 182.88 cm, which is the 84.9th percentile of US men aged 20 and over: about 15% clear it, so roughly one man in 6.6 is taller than 6 ft. It is much rarer for women — 182.88 cm is beyond the 95th percentile of US women, whose published 95th is 172.5 cm.

### How is a height percentile calculated?

NCHS publishes nine percentiles per population cell (5th, 10th, 15th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 85th, 90th and 95th), not a full distribution. Each of those nine is converted once to a z-score, and a height between two of them is read off the straight line joining their z-scores. That reproduces all nine published figures exactly and equals the normal distribution wherever the data are normal. Beyond the 5th and 95th there is nothing to interpolate, so the curve continues as a normal whose spread is fitted across all nine points — and the page marks those answers as extrapolated.

### Why does my percentile change when I change the age band?

Older US adults are shorter: the mean for men aged 20–29 is 175.8 cm against 170.4 cm for men 80 and over. So an unchanged height climbs the percentile as the band ages. That is a difference between generations — people born earlier grew up shorter, and adults also lose a little height with age — not a forecast of what will happen to you.

### Can I get a height percentile for a country other than the United States?

Yes, and the page is explicit that it is modelled. Outside the US there is no comparable percentile table: NCD Risk Factor Collaboration publishes a mean per country, sex and birth cohort, and the interval beside it is the uncertainty of that mean rather than the spread of people. The country percentile therefore takes the measured spread of US adults aged 20–29 and slides it to the country's mean. The mean, its 95% interval and the world rank out of 200 are measured; the percentile is a model, and the page says so on the result itself.
