## Overview

This calculator converts a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) to a percentage and back, using the standard multiplication factor defined by the institution. It is most commonly used by students in India and South Asia where CBSE and university results are reported on a 10-point scale rather than as a percentage.

## How to read your result

The headline figure is your percentage (in CGPA-to-percentage mode) or your CGPA (in reverse mode). The conversion scale beneath it shows three proportional bars: CGPA out of 10, the resulting percentage, and the 4.0-scale GPA equivalent. Each bar is sized relative to its own maximum so you can quickly compare where your score sits on each scale. The conversion factor — 9.5 by default for CBSE — is the heart of the calculation: multiply your CGPA by that number to get the percentage, or divide to reverse it.

## Method

For CGPA-to-percentage conversion the formula is: Percentage = CGPA × factor, where factor defaults to 9.5 (the CBSE Class 10 standard published by the Central Board of Secondary Education). The reverse conversion is: CGPA = Percentage ÷ factor. The 4.0-scale GPA equivalent uses a proportional rescaling: GPA₄ = (CGPA ÷ maxScale) × 4, where maxScale is 10 for a standard 10-point scale. When grade points for individual subjects are provided, the calculator first computes their arithmetic mean to obtain the overall CGPA, then applies the same conversion. All inputs are validated to ensure CGPA values fall within [0, maxScale] and percentages fall within [0, 100].

## Example

- **Setup:** A student scored a CGPA of 8.2 on the 10-point CBSE scale using the default factor of 9.5.
- **Result:** Percentage = 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. The 4.0-scale GPA equivalent is (8.2 / 10) × 4 = 3.28 / 4.0.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is the CBSE multiplier 9.5?

CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) derived 9.5 empirically by aligning the grade-point ranges on its Class 10 mark sheet with the corresponding percentage bands. Each grade point represents a 9.5-percentage-point band (e.g. a grade point of 10 maps to 95–100%), so multiplying by 9.5 gives the midpoint of that band as a percentage.

### Does every university use 9.5 as the conversion factor?

No. The 9.5 factor is specific to CBSE Class 10. Different boards and universities publish their own multipliers — common values are 9.5, 10, and 9.0. Always check your institution's official conversion policy and enter that factor in the "Conversion factor" field.

### How is the subject-wise CGPA computed?

The calculator averages the grade points you enter for each subject (arithmetic mean). The resulting average CGPA is then converted to a percentage using the same factor. This matches the standard CBSE method for Class 10 where five main subjects are averaged.

### How accurate is the 4.0 GPA equivalent?

The 4.0 equivalent is a linear rescaling: (CGPA / 10) × 4. It gives a rough indication for international contexts but is not an official conversion — US universities have their own transcript evaluation processes and do not universally accept this formula.

### Can I convert a percentage above 95% back to CGPA?

Yes. The calculator divides your percentage by the factor. For example, 95.0 ÷ 9.5 = 10.0 CGPA. Percentages above 100 are rejected as invalid; percentages between 95 and 100 produce CGPA values between 10 and 10.53, but the 10-point scale caps at 10 so such results should be interpreted carefully.
