## Overview

This converter instantly translates any land or plot size between metric, imperial, and South-Asian regional units. Enter an area in one unit — square metres, acres, hectares, bigha, marla, or any of the others — and see the equivalent in all fourteen units at once. Use it when buying or selling land across borders, checking a property listing, or converting survey measurements for engineering or agriculture.

## How to read your result

Every row in the results table is one unit and its equivalent for the area you entered. Values are rounded for readability; the internal calculation uses the full precision of internationally defined conversion factors. Units flagged with a regional-variation note (bigha and katha) are set to a specific regional standard — check the method section to see which one was used.

## Method

All conversions use a single base unit of one square metre. Each unit is defined by its exact square-metre factor: 1 hectare = 10,000 m² (SI definition); 1 are = 100 m²; 1 km² = 1,000,000 m²; 1 foot = 0.3048 m exactly, so 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² and 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m²; 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m² (1 acre = 4,840 yd²); 1 mi² = 640 acres = 2,589,988.110336 m². Regional units: cent = 1/100 acre = 40.4685642 m² (South India); marla = 30.25 yd² = 25.2929 m² (Pakistan/North India standard); kanal = 20 marla = 505.858 m²; bigha = 2,529.3 m² (Uttar Pradesh/Bihar pucca bigha = 5/8 acre — other regions differ); katha = 66.89 m² (Bangladesh standard — other regions differ); tsubo = 400/121 m² ≈ 3.3058 m² (Japan). The converter multiplies the input by the from-unit factor to get the base area in m², then divides by each target factor to produce the result. Factors follow NIST SP-811 for SI and imperial units.

## Example

- **Setup:** Enter 1 acre as the input unit.
- **Result:** 1 acre equals 4,046.86 m², 0.4047 hectares, 43,560 ft², 8 kanal, and approximately 160 marla — all displayed simultaneously.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many square metres are in an acre?

Exactly 4,046.8564224 m², as defined by the international agreement of 1959 that fixed the yard at 0.9144 m. This makes 1 acre = 43,560 square feet exactly, and ≈ 0.4047 hectares.

### What is a hectare and how does it compare to an acre?

A hectare is 10,000 m² — one square with 100 m sides. It is the standard metric unit for large areas of land. One hectare equals approximately 2.471 acres, so an acre is about 40 % of a hectare.

### Why does bigha vary by region?

Bigha is a traditional South-Asian land unit that was never internationally standardised. Different Indian states and Bangladesh defined it independently: values range from roughly 1,000 m² (parts of Bengal) to 3,025 m² (Rajasthan). This converter uses the Uttar Pradesh and Bihar "pucca bigha" of 2,529.3 m², which equals 5/8 of an acre. Always confirm the local definition when using bigha in a legal or property context.

### How is a kanal defined?

In the standard used across Pakistan and North India, 1 kanal = 20 marla, and 1 marla = 30.25 square yards (25.2929 m²). This gives 1 kanal ≈ 505.86 m², or exactly 1/8 of an acre. The figure shown uses that definition.

### What is tsubo and where is it used?

Tsubo is the traditional Japanese area unit for residential land and floor space. One tsubo equals exactly 400/121 m² ≈ 3.3058 m², which is 36 square shaku (the Japanese foot). Real-estate listings in Japan commonly quote prices per tsubo.
